Net-metering allows you to generate your own power without the need of a battery bank to store excess power for use after sunset.

  • with a net-metered system you use the solar power you generate and any excess power goes onto the grid
  • for every kilowatt hour of power you export onto the grid you earn a credit allowing you to import a kilowatt hour of power from the grid
  • during the spring and summer you build up a large credit balance which will off-set your fall and winter consumption
  • if you generate as much power in a year as you consume, then the only charges you would receive from your Local Distribution Company would be the fixed portion of your electricity bill, the Distribution Service Charge and the Smart Metering Entity Charge
    • in high density urban areas, this charge totals almost $21 per month
    • in medium density areas it’s a little more than $28 per month
    • in low density areas it’s just over $42 per month

There are additional up-front charges associated with the submission of Form B by an electrical engineer and the generation of a Capacity Impact Assessment by the Local Distribution Company. These additional charges total almost $10,000.
